The Thursday before last, Wake Forest’s Women’s Soccer team secured their fifth win of the season  against Loyola University Maryland and maintained their 5-0 winning streak. In celebration of 50 Years of Women in Sports at Wake, the Women’s Center hosted a pre-event tailgate before Thursday’s match. Wake For Women is a Women’s Center and Student Athletes Development initiative that promotes gender equity by raising awareness and support for our women athletes at Wake. Our tailgate had a turnout of over 60 people with an impressive turnout from the locals! Attendees mingled and enjoyed our sign-making activity station, family-friendly lawn games, free pizza and beverages!

This Wake For Women tailgate is the first of three pre-event tailgates that will occur throughout the Fall 2021 semester. Come visit us at our next tailgate on Friday October 15, 2021 4:00 pm for the Women’s Field Hockey game against UNC.

Here are some words from Rylee Kopchack, senior Track and Field and Cross Country athlete who volunteered her time and energy to help organize the tailgate:

“I am a senior at Wake and started the Wake for Women Student-Athlete Group with the help of Ashley [Wechter] and Steph [Trilling] in Fall 2020. The goal of the group is to build comradery among female student-athletes and provide a space for open communication and discussions. Through the Wake for Women program, I have had the opportunity to form meaningful friendships and be a part of a supportive community that has shared experiences and values. While last year’s meetings were virtual due to Covid, I am so excited for the in-person activities we have planned this semester and to continue building connections within our group.”
